Quebradillas is a small community where many Costa Ricans have a second home that lets them get away from all of the above mentioned problems. It is just a few miles from the sleepy little town of Santa Maria de Dota. Santa Maria, though big enough to have a few grocery stores, gas station, pharmacies, doctor’s offices and other conveniences, has that small town feel. People still greet each other on the street and agriculture is the main source of livelihood. With no traffic lights in the town, the only time I’ve seen a traffic jam is during the yearly festival when the farmers and ranchers bring their horses to town for the “Tope†(a show of high stepping and dancing horses.)
The area of Dota is peaceful and has the lowest crime in all of Costa Rica, maybe it’s because there is work available, or maybe because of it being a small town everybody knows everyone else. Though right around Santa Maria, coffee is one of the biggest crops, you will also find large fruit orchards, vegetable farms, dairies and cattle farms. Don’t worry if gas becomes to expensive to grow food in other areas, many here still use oxen to plow their fields on the sides of the mountains.
Close by is the Los Santos Forest Reserve and the new Quetzals National Park. There are miles and miles of trails to hike, and hundreds of birds and animals to spot.
Quebradillas is at an elevation of about 6500 feet. Giving it a great climate all year around. And the area is influenced by the Pacific, which means more sunny days and less fog and rain then areas nearby that are influenced by the Carribean.
The home itself has over ¾ acres of land that are ready for a home garden or you could even plant an orchard of apple, peach, avocados, citrus, mangos and other trees that grow in the area. There are great views of the quiet valley below.
If this is going to be a second home for yourself, you can move in tomorrow without worrying about buying a thing, as the house is completely furnished and ready to move into. Stop by the farmers market on you way to buy some fresh fruits and vegetables, pick up a little firewood to take the chill off the evening and your set.
The house with almost 1300 sq.ft. has hot water throughout, two full bathrooms with bathtubs and two bedrooms, a kitchen and living-dining area with fire place. There is a one car garage and an area below that could be converted into a nice workshop or art studio.
