How To Organize Your Garage And Get Rid Of Clutter
Estimated Reading Time: 6 Minutes
When you’re looking at your garage, is it full of clutter? With that, I mean the tools and equipment that you can never find.
Do you have a bike or two stashed in there with no hope of getting them back on the road again anytime soon? Is your lawnmower taking up too much space in the garage? Maybe this isn’t about a new way to organize your garage, but a good old declutter.
The idea of organizing a large area like a garage may seem overwhelming, and you may not even know where to start. In this article, we’ll try to give some helpful tips on how you can make your garage more organized and get rid of the clutter that has built up over the years.
Get Rid Of Everything You Don’t Use
Before you start organizing and arranging the stuff in your garage, try to get rid of everything that doesn’t belong there. Start with all boxes used to pack everyday items you don’t want to be stored in the house.
Your best bet is only to store the things that don’t have alternative storage anywhere else on the property. If this means you have a lot of garbage to take out, it’s time to schedule a garage clean-up and start throwing out “stuff.” In Costa Rica, we call that stuff “chunches.”
Arrange things in clusters
You will also find that this type of arrangement is helpful when looking for an item in your garage because you are already familiar with how everything else looks.
Every family has a different idea about what they consider organized, but the basic principles are the same. One example is to get a wall bike rack for garage to help you put your bicycles in order. There are wall-mounted racks and wall hanging systems, but you can even get a wall-mounted bike stand for your garage.
There is also the option to use big wall hooks and hang smaller items like bags and backpacks on them. Just ensure to check out different types.
Organize Your Garage with Shelving
One of the most common space-related home improvement tasks is organizing your garage with shelving. The reason is that garages are often cluttered, disorganized spaces where clutter builds up over time without somebody doing something about it. Some people know exactly what they have in their garages, while other people are amazed by the type and amount of old junk they find in their garages.
Organizing the garage with shelving is a simple and relatively easy home improvement task. That will allow you to put everything in its proper place and free up some much-needed space for cars, tools, etc.
Use labels to organize your garage
Organizing isn’t for everyone, but some love to keep things organized and tidy. If your garage is like many others, it’s probably filled with old lawnmowers, extra bikes, snowblowers, and much more. However, no matter how cluttered it might be, getting rid of the clutter doesn’t need to be a difficult task.
One of the best ways to organize your garage and get rid of clutter is using labels. Labels are simple tools to separate items into specific groups or categories. That makes them easier for you to find at a later date, which will reduce the clutter that piles up in your garage.
Labels are also an incredible organizational tool because you can use them to put like items together, which will make it easier for you when you’re looking for certain tools or accessories since they will all be in one place. So, for example, if you need to take something out of your vehicle but don’t feel like digging through a large pile of clutter to find the item, you can simply look at your labels and find out exactly where to go.
Use Overhead Space Wisely
Unless your cars are high off the ground SUVs, you need to make sure that you use all the available space in the room, including the ceiling.
You can take full advantage of overhead space by utilizing ceiling racks for all your tools. This will keep them out of the way but still easily accessible. Another benefit is that it keeps the floor free from clutter and hazardous tripping areas.
Build a Workbench in Your Garage
Building a workbench in your garage lets you tear down the wall of junk and disorganized tools. This gives you room for working on large and small projects. If you don’t have enough space for one big bench, or if walls are in the way, using a pegboard with hooks will give you plenty of storage options so that you can turn your garage into a fully functional workshop.
Adding cabinets, shelves, and drawer units will also help create a better storage system for all the tools collecting dust since you moved in. While building a workbench might sound intimidating, it is one of the easiest things a homeowner can do on their own. It only requires some essential tools, spare materials, and at least one day of your time. Fortunately, the supplies needed to build a workbench are inexpensive and readily available. Look for materials you can easily cut into correct lengths at your local hardware store or lumberyard or buy one.
So what are you waiting for now? Keep the next weekend free to improve your garage today by getting rid of the clutter with a little bit of time, materials, and effort. Once it’s done, you’ll be able to start filling it up again.
