Living in Cartago
Real Estate Cartago is a bit different from most real estate in Costa Rica. The city of Cartago is just a short hop (20 minutes) over the mountain to the East of San José. Cartago was the old colonial capital, dating back to 1563. It’s a bit cooler and much more laidback than San José. It’s a rather large city yet still has a small town feel to it, where most people know each other, etc. There you can find most of the amenities you will need (supermarkets, shopping, bilingual schools, etc.), and the large TerraMall is just 15 minutes away.
Cartago is probably most famous for being the home of the “Basilica“, a Byzantine-style cathedral that is the home of the patron saint of Costa Rica. It is perhaps the most important church in the country (and very important throughout Central America, and it is the focal point of an annual pilgrimage that attracts well over a million people each year (most of home walk, at least, from San José, with some walking the entire stretch of the country!).
Nearby is the Lankester Botanical Garden, a marvelous botanical garden with a world-famous orchid display. Within Cartago, you may find local-style homes as well as custom homes, condos and gated communities (although on a smaller scale) on our MLS. Cartago real estate is different because Cartago is very Tico. So if you plan to purchase Cartago property for sale, you better learn the basics in Spanish. The people are nice about it though and if you do your part, they will do theirs and you will easily be accepted by the local populations as soon as you buy a home in Cartago and live there.
The surrounding area is absolutely gorgeous, with land for sale like development land, coffee plantations, horse and cattle farms, agricultural farms and plenty of forest. Cartago is situated at the foot of the dormant Irazú Volcano, which, at an elevation of 11,300 feet, towers over the surrounding area. A beautiful paved road takes you to the very top of the volcano, where you may walk out to the edge of several craters. On a clear day, the view extends to BOTH the Pacific and Caribbean oceans!
